Scooter Committee Update

The Scooter Subcommittee met in December but took January off. However, that doesn’t mean we weren’t busy. We have continued communications with staff from District 10 Council Member Chris Hinds, District 9 Council Member Darrell Watson, staff from the City and County of Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), and staff from the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP). Our efforts have included:

· …drafting Public Service Announcements (PSA) for DDP to send to approximately 350 security professional, property management, and business owner contacts in their system. DDP will send these announcements after we approve the final PSA and get UpDoNA Board approval.

· …participating in a video conference with Armando Saldate (Denver Department of Public Safety Executive Director), Jeffrey Holliday (Denver Department of Public Safety Chief of Staff), Chris Hinds (Denver City Council Member, District 10), Shelly Oren (Denver City Council Aide, District 10), Paul Rosenthal (Denver City Council Chief of Staff, District 10), Lisa Pope (UpDoNA President), and Rob Squire (UpDoNA Vice-President) regarding options for more “active” enforcement of scooter rules by Street Engagement Team (SET) and police. All agreed that setting up a special detail of police around opening day of baseball season should be a goal. This could be combined with a “Safe Riding” campaign.

· …providing DOTI staff with our inventory of existing scooter corrals and our identification of possible future locations.

· …reviewing DOTI suggestions for signs on 14th and 15th Streets indicating that scooters are to use bike lanes.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 4:00 PM in the 10th floor common area of the Spire.
