As most of you know, the major ongoing volunteer activity for members of our UpDoNA Cares Committee has been providing and serving meals (usually monthly) at the Delores Project and Urban Peak, two local shelters. What you may not have known is that, until now, committee members have paid for the food themselves. That was because the newly-formed UpDoNA didn’t have the financial resources/stability to commit its limited funds to any ongoing expenditures. Thankfully, that has changed. Our UpDoNA Board has approved payment for the monthly food purchases, in the amount we have been spending previously, from now through the end of 2025. Ongoing support after that will depend on the UpDoNA budget and possible UpDoNA Cares targeted fundraising.
Upcoming volunteer opportunities at Urban Peak include providing/serving lunch (approx. noon-2:15 PM) on Thursday September 18, Friday October 24, and Friday November 14. Urban Peak’s Annual Event/Fundraiser “Urban Nights” is scheduled for the evening of Saturday September 13. 9 UpDoNA members have donated $250 each towards a $2500 table for 10 and will be representing UpDoNA at the event as “Glow” sponsors. Our third shelter partner, STEP Denver, does not have regular meal-related volunteer opportunities, but at times has needs for volunteers. For more information about STEP Denver, please visit their website www.stepdenver.org.
Not surprisingly, all three shelters need financial support and UpDoNA members can help with direct donations of money or by participating in fundraising events. We should hear in a couple of months about holiday gift drives and other holiday needs for the organizations that we help support.
