Increased Police Presence in Downtown Denver

Downtown Denver has faced challenges such as crime, homelessness, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of which have impacted businesses and foot traffic. The situation came to a head when 2 people were murdered and 2 more stabbed on the 16th Street Mall.

UpDoNA got involved very quickly and organized a neighborhood meeting with over 100 people participating. At the meeting, residents expressed anger, personal experiences and deep concerns about safety in Downtown Denver. The city was represented by Denver’s Chief of Police Ron Thomas, 6th Precinct Commander Kimberly Bowser, Armando Saldate Executive Director of the Denver Department of Safety, RTD and city officials from the Mayor’s office.

Subsequently, in order to address those public safety and from a desire to revitalize the area, Mayor Mike Johnston made the decision to increase the police presence in downtown Denver.

The initiative includes creating a dedicated police unit with 10 officers patrolling on foot, bicycles, and motorcycles. Additionally, the city’s mounted horse patrol unit will focus on downtown, and a police kiosk will be established at 16th and Arapahoe streets to assist residents and visitors. Other measures include deployment of private security guards, increased foot patrols, and enhancement of mental health services. This will all be supplemented by other Denver officers who will be offered overtime to assist in patrolling Downtown Denver.

Mayor Johnston emphasized the importance of making downtown feel safe and vibrant, not only to address crime but also to attract people back to the area. This effort aligns with broader investments in downtown development, including the completion of the 16th Street Mall renovation and economic initiatives.

Certainly, the murders represented the ignition, but UpDoNA had a very loud voice in helping to make this happen.
