I moved to Denver in 1974 to complete my residency in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Following my residency I began working in 1977 at what was then Denver Department of Health and Hospitals. My fist position was working in primary care at Eastside Health Center, a clinic in Denver’s five points neighborhood. I spent the rest of my career working in various capacities at Denver Health. I spent my last ten years as the Medical Director for the network of community health centers operated by Denver Health that are located throughout Denver. In that capacity, I interacted frequently with many city departments, the mayors office and city council. The city departments with which I worked most frequently were Human Services ands Public Health. In addition, I worked closely with Denver Public Schools where we operated school-based clinics in most of the DPS high schools. As part of my employment at Denver Health I had an academic appointment at the School of Medicine and as a Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health.
In addition to my work at Denver Health I have worked in a volunteer capacity at various local and national organizations, particularly those that promote the health and well being of families and children. I was a founding member of the Colorado Children’s Campaign. The professional organizations that I have worked closely with are the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of Community Health Centers and the School Health Alliance. I have also served on boards and committees at the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy.
In 2013 we sold our family home as our children had moved on and we purchased the condominium unit that we now live in at One Lincoln Park. One year later I retired from Denver Health. As a member of the OLP community I served on the BOD for two years and am now on the Finance Committee of the Board. During the COVID pandemic I chaired our COVID response committee. After doing some part-time consulting work in health care for 8 years following retirement I transitioned to full retirement and have enjoyed the freedom it brings. My wife and I enjoy the many activities available in Denver and Colorado and travel frequently, only to happily return to or home in downtown Denver.
