Although there are fewer homeless people sleeping on the streets of our neighborhood than a couple of years ago, the shelters that now house many of them need more support than ever. Urban Peak, the shelter for “youth” (ages 12-14), for example, has greatly expanded its capacity, but is always full and financially challenged. Two big factors contributing to this are the closures of other youth shelters and decrease in or disappearance of some traditional governmental funding streams. The Delores Project, a local shelter for women and transgender people, faces similar challenges.
UpDoNA continues to support these two shelters, with Cares Committee members preparing and serving lunches, usually monthly at each place. We could do more if we had more volunteers, so please let me know if you are interested in working with us to help those in need(ron23townsend@gmail.com). Upcoming lunch dates include:
The Delores Project (11 AM – 1:15 PM): Sun March 22, Tues May 19
Urban Peak (Noon-2:15 PM): Fri Mar 27, Fri Apr 24
The shelters accept donations at any time to help them fulfill their missions and we encourage everyone who can to donate. This is most easily done online (thedeloresproject.org urbanpeak.org). We also support STEP DENVER, a shelter primarily for men with alcohol or other addiction problems. They don’t have regular volunteer needs, but we do occasional projects there, and you can donate online (stepdenver.org).
